Persuasive Essay On Gun Control - 1636 Words
On an average day, 93 Americans are killed with a gun (Everytown). Beginning with the National Firearms act of 1934, gun control has been a controversial topic in American society and politics. Gun control is a set of laws aimed to limit the production, distribution, possession and modifications of fire arms utilized by civilians. Presently, the United States outlaws the selling, and ownership, of fully automatic weapons but allows the distribution of semi-automatic weapons. Purchasing extended magazines, military style .50 caliber and assault style weapons is legal on a federal level. In Washington state, it is legal to openly carry an unloaded pistol without a permit. It is also legal to own a rifle, shotgun or handgun without a permit.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is illogical to maintain all of our rights when our safety is compromised. Furthermore, the second amendment was written in a completely different era and does not apply to modern times. Jill Lepore, writer for the N ew Yorker, remarks than when the second amendment was written, in 1791, gun owners had ââ¬Å"long arms that, like a smaller stockpile of pistols, could discharge only once before they had to be reloadedâ⬠(Lepore). At the time, the weapons they had were not as deadly as the ones available now. Their guns could not harm hundreds of people with one clip because they were inefficient, provided poor accuracy and low range. Modern guns are the complete opposite, especially semiautomatic weapons. The significant difference in weapons means that the second amendment cannot be fully applied to todayââ¬â¢s weapons. The second amendment states that people have the right to bear arms but times have changed and so should the meaning of it. The constitution is a living document, its interpretation should be adapted to provide more sense of public safety as time goes by while upholding gun ownership rights. Gun control should be implemented on extended magazines due to safety concerns. E xtended magazines allow for a gun to shoot longer with less reloading time. According to David Chapman, a special agent in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, high-capacity magazines ââ¬Å"turns a killer into a killing machine.â⬠(/Show MoreRelatedPersuasive Essay : Gun Control798 Words à |à 4 PagesPersuasive Essay Did you know that in the United States almost 100,000 people are shot or killed with a gun in one year? 10,527 people die a year in handgun related incidents in the United States. Willa Cather s My Antonia - 1432 Words
In Willa Catherââ¬â¢s novel My à ntonia, Cather uses the theme of the natural world to further expand on the persona of the character, Jim Burden, and his romantic outlook on life. Jim shows a strong bond to nature because it brings back his idyllic childhood memories and the feelings he had of absolute bliss. By connecting the theme of nature to his childhood, Jim presents the idea that he feels dissatisfied as an adult in the city and misses his life on the farm where he was in union with nature. Moreover, Jim links à ntonia, the most important person from his childhood, to the idea of nature. He recognizes that the familiar feeling of utter happiness brought to him by nature is also brought to him by à ntonia; therefore, his memories of à ntonia coincide with the natural world around him. Jimââ¬â¢s ability to make the most minute occurrences in the natural world hold a deeper, more profound meaning, such as his elaborate depiction of a sunset from his childhood, asse rts him as a romantic character. Furthermore, Cather correlates the changes of the seasons and the development of the farmland to further illustrate Jimââ¬â¢s growth as a character. In particular, she uses the transition from winter to spring to highlight Jimââ¬â¢s character growth as a result of the impact the tragic events of winter had on him. The Picture Of Dorian Gray Argumentative Essay Example For Students
The Picture Of Dorian Gray Argumentative Essay Art, what is Art? It is an ambiguous matter: without an exact form, an exact meaning. Does it have any rules or restrictions? However, it can be a great influence on the lives of people. In the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, two lovers have fell in and out of love due to Art! Dorian Gray found Sibyl charming because of her Art! She has not merely art, consummate art-instinct in her, but she has personality also; and you have often told me that it is personalities, not principles, that move the age (63). Sibyl is an actress. She is formed by others: no self is without external influence. Therefore, Art that expresses the self is less valuable than art which expresses the influence of others. The special thing that made Dorian mad about her is that she is more than an individual. I (Dorian) have seen her in every age and in every costume. Ordinary women never appeal to ones imagination. No glamour ever transfigures them (59). By imagination that Sibyl has the power to arouse, she can be of any characteristics. Art has no set form, but the purpose of art is to give form to feeling. Now, Sibyl is a person that is able to provide all kinds of feelings that Dorian wishes to experience. Dorian finds extreme pleasure in experiencing through all the sentiments that Sibyl gives. Being a spectator to the different lives and stories amuses Dorian: one evening Sibyl is Juliet, next evening she is Imogen, another night, she is Roselind. Art is something that arouse imaginations, imaginations of the viewer. In order for imagination to live, reality must not exist. She regarded me merely as a person in a play. She knows nothing of life (61). Art is not real, or, rather, it forms its own type of reality, its own world. Kbefore I knew you (Dorian), acting was the one reality of my life. It was only in the theatre that I lived. I thought that it was all true (95). Before Sibyl fell in love with Dorian, she lives in a world or Art, a world of imaginations. That great pureness of Art is so powerful that she can spiritualize her audiences, and give them a soul if they lived without one, create the sense of beauty in people whose lives have been sordid and ugly. Art has the power to bring people into a place where they have not been, or a place that they dont have the opportunity to go to in the reality. Dorian has realized, I love acting. It is so much more real than life (88). Real life is so limited as to in acting, a man can live any scene that he can possibly think of. Dorians rejection of Sibyl came upon one night that Sibyl has lost her magic. A night that her acting lost the power to attract and charm the audiences. Good artists exist simply in what they make, and consequently are perfectly uninteresting in what they are (64). That night, she spoke the words as though they conveyed no meaning to her?Kshe was absolutely self-contained. It was simply bad art. She was a complete failure (93). Sibyl has become herself! She has gotten out of the world of imagination into the real world, into what she is, herself! Sibyls mind is occupied by Dorian. You are more to me than all art can ever be (96). Now, all the wonderful influences that Sibyl had, have been wiped out, but the influence of Dorian Gray. She tried to show Dorian of her love for him, but as the author of the book mentioned in the Preface, No artist desires to prove anything. Sibyl is no longer an artist. There is no more imagination for she is a person, an individual now, a Sibyl that is in love with Dorian, and Dorian only. There is no more curiosity that Dorian can have of her. .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 , .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .postImageUrl , .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 , .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0:hover , .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0:visited , .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0:active { border:0!important; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0:active , .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0 .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub23199c61b7f7414d4c4dfcb20634fc0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Antigones Right Problems Essay You have killed my love (96). Dorian didnt loved Sibyl, he loves Art! How little you can know of love, if you say it mars your art! Without your art you are nothing (97). Anything without Art is plain to Dorian. Dorians philosophy of Romance is consist of infinite imaginations, beauty, personality, and attraction of curiosity, which is Art. Dorian have found so much imaginations to Sibyl as she acted in Shakespares play, but how come he could not or would not think or indulge himself one second to imagination of his love story? Is it because as Basil Hallward, a great artist that have painted a portrait of Dorian Gray, said, An artist should create beautiful things, but should put nothing of his own life into them (19). Dorian Gray founded Sibyl as a beautiful creature, but he put nothing of his own life into her. The one who Sibyl fell in love to, is Prince Charming. It is only the life of Sibyl that is heard of from their love affair. Dorian never really participated, he was only a spectator. After Sybil lives in the real world, Prince Charming is killed in the world of imagination. Art for arts sake, after Art is vanished, the relationship is over. English Essays
